UK Car Production Slumps on JLR Cyberattack

In September 2025, UK car production experienced a significant decline of 27% compared to the previous year, with output falling to 51,090 units. This represents the lowest September production level since 1952, largely due to a severe cyberattack on Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). JLR, responsible for manufacturing approximately 1,000 vehicles daily across its three UK facilities, is now in the process of resuming operations after a production standstill exceeding five weeks. The situation was compounded by an even sharper decline of 36% in overall vehicle output, which includes commercial vehicles, following Stellantis NV's earlier decision to close its Vauxhall van plant in Luton. Mike Hawes, the Chief Executive of the SMMT, remarked, "September's results were anticipated, given the complete production halt at the UK's largest automotive employer due to a cyber incident. Although some recovery is underway, the industry still faces substantial challenges."
