German Imports Rebound in August

Germany’s imports rose 0.9% month-on-month to EUR 118.1 billion in August 2026, falling short of market expectations for a 2.8% increase but recovering from a downwardly revised 5.5% decline in July. Imports from non-EU countries grew by 2.2% compared with the previous month, reaching EUR 58.8 billion, largely driven by an 11% surge in purchases from China. By contrast, imports from the US fell 0.5%, and those from the UK decreased 3.8%.

Imports from EU member states slipped 0.4% to EUR 59.3 billion, weighed down by lower inflows from both euro area partners (down 0.3%) and EU countries outside the eurozone (down 0.7%). On a year-on-year basis, total imports increased 6%, accelerating from an upwardly revised 3.2% gain in the previous month. Over the first eight months of the year, Germany’s imports amounted to EUR 946.7 billion, 4.4% higher than in the same period a year earlier.
