Bitcoin unfazed after Binance heist

Traders braced for the worst after the unprecedented hack of the world's largest crypto exchange. Instead, Bitcoin seemed to defy gravity and barely moved.

BTC/USD is trading around $78,000, down roughly 5% from the recent high reached before Binance disclosed the $6.3 billion breach. The token's resilience is largely explained by the exchange's swift response and its immediate pledge to cover all losses.

Binance remains the largest crypto exchange globally with $135 billion in assets — about four times any rival. The fact that Bitcoin held up over the weekend is read by the market as a vote of confidence in Binance's assurances, especially since the exchange itself is buying the token to compensate users' losses.

But the mood underneath is far from calm. Market participants view the incident as only the tip of the iceberg and expect further hacks as AI capabilities advance, given that even the largest exchange proved vulnerable.

The contrast with the FTX collapse in 2022 is stark. Back then, the largest digital asset lost nearly 19% in a week as Sam Bankman-Fried's exchange went from a liquidity crisis to bankruptcy and trust evaporated across the market. Investors treated the current episode as an operational shock rather than a systemic one, and buyers returned within hours.

Bybit's history — where hackers stole about $1.5 billion in 2025 — warns of deceptive calm. The token's initial reaction then was muted, but losses mounted, and a week after the February 21 attack, BTC/USD fell almost 14%.

For institutional investors, the lesson is simple: no venue is risk-free, and their future demand remains crucial for the industry. Concerns about operational security risk deterring precisely those buyers.

The crypto market is noticeably more mature. Against trillions of dollars in crypto holdings, a $6 billion loss in a single hack does not look apocalyptic. Still, each new incident forces stronger protections.

Bitcoin and other tokens were already under pressure before the hack. Investors sold large tech stocks after weak earnings, pushing the Nasdaq-100 into its third technical correction this year. But the bigger short-term influence on crypto may come from the US midterms: a change in party control of Congress could determine the fate of digital-asset regulation.

If even the world's biggest exchange proved vulnerable, who will dare call their holdings truly safe?

Technically, the daily BTC/USD chart shows bulls attempting to recover the internal bars. If they fail, short entry points are at $77,300 and $76,900. A break of the local low at $76,150 would increase the risk of a continued correction toward $74,000 and $69,500.
