India–China relations show positive momentum

Good news! Relations between India and China have shown positive momentum. At least, that is the view of Ajit Doval, Chief Adviser to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Should we celebrate for India, or is there a catch?

According to Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Adviser, New Delhi’s ties with Beijing are now demonstrating positive dynamics. This, he said, could be an important signal for a possible shift in India’s foreign policy amid growing tariff pressure from US President Donald Trump.

“There has been an upward trend (in the bilateral relations) in the past nine months,” Doval emphasized. His comments came on the eve of his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

It is worth noting that the Chinese minister visited India for the first time in three years. Analysts believe that the two countries are showing slow but steady progress in restoring cooperation. This trend has been observed since late 2024 and has gained momentum against the backdrop of Trump’s tariff policies.

According to Doval, his talks with Wang Yi carry special significance. At the same time, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit China later this month to attend a regional summit. This will mark the Indian leader’s first trip to China in seven years.

Relations between the Asian neighbors deteriorated after a border clash five years ago but are now beginning to recover. Moreover, Beijing has eased some restrictions on New Delhi (for example, on urea exports), while Indian authorities have reinstated tourist visas for Chinese citizens. In parallel, many Indian companies are seeking agreements with Chinese firms, including in the field of technology transfer.
