Australia Building Permits Confirmed to Drop 8.2%

In July 2025, Australia witnessed an 8.2% month-over-month decrease in the seasonally adjusted number of total dwelling approvals, amounting to 15,769 units. This decline aligns with preliminary projections and offsets the previous 12.2% growth observed in June. The reduction primarily stemmed from a notable 22.3% drop in approvals for private sector dwellings, excluding houses, which had surged by 33.5% the month prior. Conversely, approvals for private sector houses experienced a slight increase of 1.1%, following a 1.9% decline in June. State-specific data indicated decreases in approvals for New South Wales (-24.6%) and South Australia (-1.3%), whereas Tasmania (12.2%), Western Australia (11.8%), Queensland (5.9%), and Victoria (0.7%) reported growth. Compared to the previous year, total dwelling approvals saw a 6.6% rise, marking a deceleration from the revised 28.0% growth documented in the preceding month.
