German Unemployment Holds at 6.3% as Labor Market Stagnates

Germany’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 6.3% in February 2026, highlighting the ongoing pressure that three years of economic weakness continue to exert on Europe’s largest labor market. Andrea Nahles, head of the Federal Employment Agency, noted that the labor market is still struggling to gain momentum, even as the typical winter slowdown comes to a close.

The number of unemployed rose slightly by 1,000 to 2.98 million on a seasonally adjusted basis, a smaller increase than the 2,000 expected. In non-seasonally adjusted terms, unemployment declined by 14,700 to 3.07 million, easing from January’s nearly 12-year high of 3.08 million.
