EU Car Registrations Fall 7.3% in June

In June 2025, passenger car registrations across the European Union experienced a 7.3% year-on-year decrease, totaling 1.01 million units. This downturn marked a reversal from the previous 1.6% increase observed in May and represented the first drop in car registrations since April. The decline was evident in all four major EU markets: Belgium saw a 16.4% reduction, Germany 13.8%, Spain a significant 45.2%, and Italy 34.4%.

Meanwhile, the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment witnessed a 7.8% increase in registrations, notably fueled by a dramatic 103.2% surge in Spain. Germany and the Netherlands also recorded growth in this segment, at 8.6% and 6.4%, respectively. In contrast, registrations declined in Belgium by 6.9% and Italy by a significant 40.4%.

For the first half of 2025, overall car registrations in the EU decreased by 1.9% compared to the same period last year. Nevertheless, new battery-electric vehicle sales rose by 12.5%, reaching 869,271 units and making up 15.6% of the total EU market share. Notably, three of the EU's largest BEV markets — Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands — accounted for 60% of all BEV registrations, with growth rates of 35.1%, 19.5%, and 6.1%, respectively. Conversely, France experienced a decrease in BEV registrations, falling by 6.4%.
