Costa Rica Inflation Rate Swings to Deflation

In May 2025, Costa Rica experienced a slight annual inflation rate of -0.12%, a decrease from the previous month's 0.37% rise, reaching its lowest point since November 2024. The pace of price reductions accelerated in areas such as transportation (-3.63% compared to April's -2.34%), communications (-3.75% against -3.73%), and furniture, appliances, and services (-0.80% opposed to -0.72%). Meanwhile, price increases for dining out and accommodation services moderated, with figures at 1.38% from 1.75%, and restaurants and lodging at 1.60% from 2.07%. Conversely, education saw the most significant price hike at 3.40%, up from 3.27%. Price increases also decelerated for alcoholic beverages and tobacco (-0.63% from -0.86%) and clothing and footwear (-1.97% from -2.36%). Overall, seven of the thirteen major product categories experienced price rises. On a monthly scale, consumer prices decreased by 0.40%.
