In July 2026, US building permits increased by 4.3% month-over-month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.433 million, coming in slightly below the preliminary estimate of 1.433 million. Permits for multifamily buildings with five or more units jumped 7.3% to 482,000, while single-family permits rose 2.5% to 894,000. By region, permits climbed in the Midwest (up 10.8% to 225,000) and the South (up 5.6% to 748,000), were unchanged in the West (holding at 308,000), and declined in the Northeast (down 1.9% to 152,000).
