El Salvador Trade Deficit Narrows in January

El Salvador’s trade deficit narrowed to USD 799.23 million in January 2026, down from USD 905.30 million in the same month a year earlier. Imports declined 4.39% to USD 1.36 billion, mainly reflecting a 1.54% drop in maquila goods. Purchases from countries outside Central America fell 5.81%, while imports from within the region increased 1.73%. Meanwhile, exports grew 8.46% to USD 559.4 million, supported by a 154.94% surge in traditional goods and a 0.91% rise in non-traditional products. Sales to markets outside Central America edged up 0.14%, and exports to other Central American countries rose 1.42%.
