EU Car Registrations Edge Down 0.2% in March

In March 2025, passenger car registrations within the European Union experienced a slight decline of 0.2% compared to the same month the previous year, with total units amounting to 1.03 million. This follows a 3.4% decrease in February, marking the third consecutive month of downward trends amidst a volatile and unpredictable global economic landscape for automakers. The most significant decrease was observed in the Netherlands, which fell by 14.8%, followed by France at -14.5%, Belgium at -10.2%, and Germany at -3.9%. On the other hand, Italy saw a positive increase of 6.3%. Over the first quarter of 2025, car registrations overall declined by 1.9% compared to the same period in 2024. However, new battery-electric vehicle sales saw substantial growth, rising by 23.9% to 412,997 units, and securing 15.2% of the total EU market share. Notably, three out of the four largest markets in the EU, which make up 63% of all battery-electric car registrations, experienced considerable growth: Germany at +38.9%, Belgium at +29.9%, and the Netherlands at +7.9%. In contrast, France faced a decline of 6.6%.
