In June 2025, El Salvador experienced an expanded trade deficit, reaching $844.7 million, compared to $707 million in the same period the previous year. This change was driven by import growth that exceeded the pace of exports. Imports saw a significant increase, climbing 16.6% year-on-year to total $1.42 billion. This surge was largely attributed to a 24.2% rise in the purchase of capital goods. Although exports increased by 12.5%, reaching $574.1 million, this was not enough to offset the sharp rise in imports. The export increase was largely fueled by a substantial 49.7% rise in coffee shipments, whereas sugar exports suffered a dramatic 72% decline.
