Malaysia Leading Economic Index Edges Up

Malaysia’s leading economic index was broadly stable in June 2026, edging up 0.02% month-on-month after a 0.5% decline in May. The slight improvement was mainly supported by a rebound in real imports of other basic precious and non-ferrous metals (0.8% vs -0.7% in May) and a rise in the number of approved housing units (0.4% vs -0.2%).

These gains were partly offset by declines in several components: the number of newly registered companies (-0.6% vs -0.5%), real imports of semiconductors (-0.1% vs 0.3%), the Bursa Malaysia Industrial Index (-0.1% vs 0.1%), real money supply M1 (-0.1% vs 0.3%), and expected manufacturing sales value (-0.3% vs 0.2%).

On a yearly basis, the leading index rose 1.3%, picking up from an upwardly revised 1.1% increase in May. Meanwhile, the coincident index, which tracks current economic conditions, grew 0.3% month-on-month, recovering from a 0.3% drop in May.
